Big Brother

Time for another rant. I'll make it short.

I'm surprised at the level of interest in this junk. And the papers (well the tabloids) are still putting this on their front pages every other day. Channel 4 must be laughing their socks off at the amount of publicity it's generated.

40 000 people 'offended' - yet they carry on watching. It even made newsnight where I heard these 'deeply racially offensive comments' for the first time. It just sounded like a normal everyday conversation that you hear taking place on a bus or in a pub between two rather thick people, rather than something sinister and shameful.

Why do people watch BB anyway? Is the intelligent conversation between the inmates, or the beauty of Jade Goody?

Oh the irony Anton!!

When even the most sceptical of sceptics is debating BB on their blog, does that not answer the question as to why it is so successful/popular?

If you give it recognition and debate then it is doing its job!

Yes, but nearly everything in life is an irony. I mean take John's blog for instance (and I'm not apportioning blame or accusing of anyone being hypocritcal because I think we're all guilty). There's a serious post about climate change and then it's followed by wishes to travel all over the world by plane...in politics the Lib Dems see themselves as the most forward-thinking 'progressive' party of all, yet they find themselves dominated by middle-class, middle-aged white men - everything they don't want...in the US the poorest states are the most right-wing and the Republicans seem to be out to screw the poorest over. The richer liberal minded people vote Democrat, who would tax them more...the English seem to be a fairly anti-European nation in just about everything, yet our premiership is totally dominated by foreigners (and we seem happy about it)...ironic indeed.

But why do people watch Big brother or any of this reality TV? Is it to make themselves feel superior, or is it just easy viewing?

People like the show. The viewer will be interested in the interaction and the fact they are celebrities. I think that if something is popular politicians should and will take note of it, Or else they could just again be accused of not being in touch with the average person.
I watch the show when on the computer its interesting to a degree and yes it is easy watching. For me the attraction is whether one person can be nice and then you can see them in a different light a few hours later. I found George Gallowey MP a very interesting character last year and i feel I learn something from it. Reading people is a lost skill in modern life and I believe it indirectly teaches people about what real people do.
