green taxes

So these 'Green Taxes' that are going to come in. Does this mean that I'm not going to go on my annual 5 foreign holidays a year (think I've been abroad 10 times since start of 2005) and every time by plane. A trend I intend to continue. Or is it all a load of guff/hot air?

I better get that Tampere/Oslo/Venice/Rome flight booked pronto! I must say Tampere is turning me on the most at the moment, although Oslo is still in with a good chance.

Oh, and just a minor grumble, I've noticed that people are sometimes writing 'alot' when they mean 'a lot'. I've noticed this creeping into a few of the blogs.

I don't think the point is to stop you going on holiday, just make you pay the real cost of it. The airline industry gets no duty or VAT on its fuel... thats scandilous and makes for a really unfair playing field, after all, we have to pay duty & VAT on fuel to drive to London, or go on the train to Edinburgh. I think all flights should be made carbon neutral by default. It doesn't cost much, around £5 for a European flight. look for yourself at

But it's this off-setting that I just don't get. It all seems a bit of a gimmick. Surely the only way forward is to try and reduce the numbers of people flying back to the levels of, say, 1960. And the only way to do that is to make them cripplingly expensive. And the only way people could travel to Spain or Prague for example would be to go by train. It wouldn't be popular, and they'd be plenty of job casualties but maybe we need a strong govt that would be prepared to force through draconian measures!

The idea of offsetting is that it's better than simply doing nothing. In an ideal world you would substantially reduce plane travel. In the practical world that will simply not happen with the way modern business works and peoples desire to see places. Hence offsetting. It's not as good as not using the aeroplane, but it's a lot better than simply using it full stop. Makes perfect sense to me!
